First Edition CD of the Photo Archives!

I got another 50+ of the "Sycamore Valley Stash" pictures scanned and added to the Galleries. The new pictures can be found in Gallery 19 - Sycamore Valley Stash - Part 2. Included in this set is the commission as First Lieutenant of William P. Morrison in July of 1861. As usual, I couldn't resist restoring some of the pictures...

The "First Edition" CD of the photo galleries is now available! The CD includes all the pictures on in the archives as of 7/3/2006 (today) and has larger slide images. Just put it in your computer's CD drive and it should start automatically.

Sorry, but the "full size" (1200 dpi) pictures aren't included. (***WAY*** too much to fit on a CD or a DVD for that matter... the full archive now uses just a bit over 17 Gigabytes of disk space.) I'm thinking of publishing a new edition every six months to a year depending on the number of new pictures.

Let me know if you would like a copy.

Almost 100 new pictures added! Total number of photos now almost 1,200! and growing...

In addition to the pictures from on loan from Robert, Morris, and Serena Morrison (what I'm calling the "Sycamore Valley Stash"), Johanna loaned me some of her old pictures and a photo album to add to the archives. Johanna's contributed pictures can be found in Gallery 17 - Johanna's Contributions.

I've gotten a start on the "Sycamore Valley Stash" of pictures and the first batch is in Gallery 18 - Sycamore Valley Stash - Part 1. This collection of pictures contains some very old pictures. I've retouched/restored several of the pictures and they're included along with the originals.

As always, if anyone would like prints (3" x 5" up to 13" x 19") just let me know. I'll be glad to print them.

Sarah's Africa trip And a few more pictures

Sarah made it back from a 3 week trip to Africa (Zambia) where she was doing mission work for the church - working at the orpahanage, teaching school, and many other jobs (whatever needed done from the sounds of it...).

Her pictures from the trip are in Gallery 16. Included is a video of her bungi jumping at Victoria falls. Obviously it wasn't all work and no play!. More pictures of Victoria falls and her bungi jumping will be coming soon.

Gallery 15 has a few pictures from Sycamore Valley when Johanna and I visited with Robert, Morris & Serena one afternoon.

While we were there, Serena found a bunch of old pictures (more than a hundred by my quick estimate - many from the early 1920's and some dating back to 1895!) which Robert & Morris have been kind enough to let me borrow to scan and archive. We looked through them all and Serena and the boys (Robert and Morris) helped identify many of the folks in the pictures (now if I can just remember who's who when the pictures arrive...).

The particular Owen family that we're referring to is:

New pictures... Letters from Europe 1957... more...

...and yes (I believe) the photo gallery is working again. Apologies to all who came to visit and couldn't get to the pictures. If the site isn't working *please* let me know at Jeff@TheOwenFamily.org or give me a call.

And now the new stuff: There are new family pictures in Gallery 10 and Gallery 11. I found a bunch of letters to and from Chesterhill folks to Grandfather and Grandmother while they were in Europe July-Sept 1957. These can be found in Gallery 12. In Gallery 14 are scans of stamps that were with the letters - Mexican, Vatican, French, and some U.S.

I've also started cataloging the coin collection. The silver dollars and gold are scanned and can be seen here.

I'm going to investigate how to best conserve the letters - they are starting to become quite fragile. The coins are being placed in individual bags ("poly bags" - specifically for storing coins), scanned, and labeled as they're cataloged. Any "good" (e.g. valuable) coins I'll have "graded and slabbed" (3rd party certification of coin and placed in an airtight container).

If the stamps are of interest to anybody (Wendell?) let me know - my knowledge of stamps is nil.

Last but not least... if you have pictures, letters, vids/movies that you'd like to contribute - please do. I'll just scan/capture for the archives and send it back.

P.S. - Does anybody have the print "Life and age of man: stages of man’s life from the cradle to the grave"? (Currier and Ives, c. 1860) I've got "The Life and Age of Woman" and would like to scan a copy of the "Man" version. I was able to get a very good scan of the "Woman" print without removing it from the frame. It seems impossible to find a copy to buy, beg or steal... My memory (faulty as it can be at times) is that both prints are in the family.

Quick Update - 2-24-2006

New photos have been added. I've changed the videos so that they will auto-detect your connection speed. Your connection speed needs to be at least 128bps. The faster your connection the better the video will look. If you've got DSL or Cable you should be in great shape.

Latest News - 2-12-2006

Ok... I'm finally getting around to updating the site. First off, I've moved the postings about Mom to an "archive" located here.

Secondly, since I'm semi-retired (temporarily anyway...), loafing and generally have lots of time on my hands... I've actually started scanning the family pictures.

I've switched photo gallery software (the stuff that creates the pages and various sizes of the pictures) so now you can go through thumbnails, click and get a larger (good for web viewing) image, and if you want the "archive" file (full-size, 1200 dpi) you can click the larger image. There is also a slide-show feature where you can cruise through the pictures.

DVD's will be forthcoming of both the pictures and the video.
