Archive page - Mom's passing

Latest News - 7-4-2005

Well... we've all gotten through the funeral, the sorting and dividing, the paperwork and accounting, as well as a million other things related to Mom's passing. Thank you to everyone who came to visitation and/or the funeral. Thanks to those who sent flowers, cards, and who have made donations. We all miss her.

It seems that somehow I've become the family photo archivist. This may have something to do with my saying that we should scan all the pictures into a computer for permanent (and non-deteriorating) storage. At first there was an attempt to pick'n choose which photos to store digitally and which not. This strategy was quickly abandoned however, and everything packed up and sent to Colorado for me to scan. Not a small task. Fortunately I do have the equipment (scanners, file and web servers, T1 speed internet access, etc.) for the job. Today I'm posting the first of what will be many sets of photos.

These are from the photo album we found which I hand carried back home. They are mostly older (1960's and 1970's) pictures. They can be seen at here.

This particular set of photos is organized a little differently. Each page of the album has its own web page. The first photo on each page is a low-resolution image of the entire album page (200 dpi/24 bit color) and is approximately 3 megabytes in size. The other images are high-resolution archive quality images (1200 dpi/24 bit color) and range anywhere from 20MB to 300+ MB. All images are edited/retouched except those with indicated with "(rt)" in the name.

Enjoy the photos. If you wish a printed copy of a particular photo please email me at Jeff@Jeff-Owen.com. Please indicate picture name (pgxx-yy.jpg) and the size of print you would like (anything up to 8"x 10".

Been a couple weeks since updating the site. Jennifer was in for 2 1/2 weeks and returned home to Belgium this past Monday (5/21). Jerry came and stayed until I arrived on Wednesday (5/25). Friday evening was my daughter Sarah's graduation (pics to come soon). Unfortunately mom wasn't well enough to attend but videos were made and a DVD ordered (from school) so she can watch sometime soon.. I took a bunch of photos we'll have those as well.

Uncle Gary and aunt Gala came to visit on Sunday and took Nancy and Brion back to Columbus to catch their plane back to Denver (they came in with me to visit with mom and go to Sarah's graduation). Uncle Vic stopped by on Monday to a quick visit and Sue Whitacre (my cousin Rick's wife) stopped by Wednesday (6/1) to visit. Mom was resting and so she didn't get to say hi to mom but we had a very nice visit.

At the moment I'm planning to be here until Monday (6/6) and Jerry is coming for several days starting Sunday (6/5) which will be nice as we'll have a little time to catch up with each other. Jennifer is planning to come back on the 10th and stay for a couple weeks. Johanna stops by most mornings to get mom off to a good start in the mornings.

Mom's doing Ok. She's had some pain but we're managing to stay ahead of it and she's comfortable. Her appetite is still great. Her “sweet tooth” is still functioning as she has several deserts and other sweet stuff every day.

Strawberries are coming in season and a couple folks have very kindly brought some by. They have been a big hit. She's eats them almost as fast as we can get them ready! (not quite but close). Thank you.

As always the Glenwood folks have been wonderful and a great help. - Marge, Judy, Tina, the servers and the kitchen staff - Thank you again.

Thank you to the all the aides and nurses who have been a great helping us take care of mom. Thanks also to the other folks from/associated with Marietta Memorial who have been great in helping with issues as they come up.

More cards wishing mom well arrive and they are truly appreciated.

Jeff

Mom had a good Mother's Day which included bouquets of flowers, lots of chocolates as well as other treats.

Sarah and Lisa were here that day (and brought chocolate). Johanna is by every morning. Jerry is coming in today and will be here until Saturday and Nancy Starling has promised to come by with rhubarb tonight. Vic was here today with son Rush.

She enjoys keeping up with the news on CNN and the many cards that keep coming in. Resting often, but otherwise continuing the same.

First off... Thanks to everyone who has visited this little site for information about how Mom is doing. It's just one of many ways that you all have shown how much you care. Thank you.

Mom has received many cards from family, friends, and Glenwood/The Pines folks. Mom reads each one and they have all been very much appreciated. The piano was covered with many of the cards as the pictures show. The flowers she's gotten have been quite a hit... and they seem to magically arrive just when the last ones are about done... I'm not sure how that happens but it's very, very nice and thank you.

Also thanks to Lane's Welding for building Mom a railing setup to use in her apartment for her PT.

Mom's recovery progress has slowed and improvement appears to have reached a plateau. The PT and speech therapy continue and we're all hopeful. While communication is sometimes a little difficult, Mom generally manages to make her wishes and needs known (as you might imagine!). Her appetite is great and seems to have developed (an even bigger?) sweet tooth. All in all things are going well and Mom is comfortable as can be and is not in any pain.

I've been in Marietta since last Friday (4/29) and will head back to Colorado tomorrow (5/6). Jennifer arrived yesterday from Belgium (sans the younger Underwoods this time) for an extended stay. Johanna comes by most mornings before going to work at her store and stops by later in the day as work and her son allow. Jerry has been back'n forth from Chicago many times.

On Jennifer's last visit (with Olivia, Owen, and little Lena) the kids drew sidewalk art (now all washed away by the rains...). Pictures of some of their wonderful art are below.

I will try to update this page more often since there is more readership than I had imagined.

Mom is doing better. She's gaining strength and her speech has continued to improve a little each day. Jennifer has returned to Belgium with Olivia, Owen, & Lena. Jerry and his family are in Marietta with mom this week and Jeff will arrive Friday for a week. Jennifer is expected to return (by herself this time...) sometime next week as well.

Mom is feeling well enough to be ornery... at least about doing some of her physical therapy anyway (or so I hear...)

We're all hopeful that mom will recover enough to get out and about soon.

Johanna, as always, been helping out and thanks to Lisa, Sarah, and Alice for all their help and support.

Jennifer's kids drew some very nice sidewalk art while at Glenwood for mom. I have pics and will post them soon.

Last Wednesday (4/13) mom underwent a biopsy of a brain tumor that was recently discovered. While the surgery went well some side-effects were apparent. Her speech was affected and her right side was weakened. Mom is at home in Glenwood and she has improved considerably since the surgery. She still has trouble with her speech and needs assistance to stand and get around (a wheel-chair at the moment).

Johanna stayed and cared for mom initially (and continues to do so...) and has been of great help all the way around helping care for mom.

All of the kids have been back (Jerry several times...) and Jennifer is staying with Mom thru the week.

Nurses aids are with Mom 24x7 and PT, OT, and speech therapists are working with her regualarly.

We're trying to make sure that one of us is always there with mom in addition to the nurses aids. Who will be there when has yet to be worked out. If we can get a firm schedule put together we may post it here.

Mom spends a good deal of time resting, but is able to take phone calls when she's up during the day. Please - no calls after 7:00 PM EDT.

We will try to keep this updated to keep everyone posted.

Thanks to all the folks who brought food, cakes, toys for Jennifers kids (who are there with Jennifer), etc.

Many thanks to the Glenwood staff and all the great folks there who have been so helpful during this time.
